The Ancient name of Pakhawaj is MRIDANG, which is derived from Sanskrit language मृत: अङ्ग: यस्य इति मृदङ्ग: that means the instrument which part is made of Soil. It is mentioned briefly in the Veda, NatyaShastra, and Puranas as a “DevaVadya”. It was created by The Brahma, firstly played by Shri Ganesh and then by Indra, Narada, Maharishi Swati, Arjun, and so on. It is the mother instrument of Indian drums. It is predominantly played with Dhrupad, Kathak, and String Instruments like Rudravina, Sur Bahar, Khayal, and Kirtan (Haveli Sangeet).
